Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla extract until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Press 2/3 of the oat mixture into the bottom of your prepared dish to create a solid base.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine blackberries, diced apples, granulated sugar, chopped sage, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Cook until the fruit has softened and the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Spread the warm fruit filling evenly over the oat crust.
  • Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the fruit filling.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown.
  • Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

For extra crunch, mix in chopped nuts into the oat topping. Allow the bars to rest overnight for the best flavor.
