For the Mascarpone Cream

For the Chocolate Ganache

  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate, chopped Creates a silky ganache.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch cake pan with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  • In another bowl, beat softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with buttermilk, and then mix in hot espresso.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 20-25 minutes. Let it cool completely.

Assembly

  • Mix strong brewed espresso and coffee liqueur in a small bowl for the espresso soak.
  • Beat together mascarpone cheese, whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until thick.
  • Heat heavy cream for ganache, pour over chopped dark chocolate, and stir until smooth.
  • Crumble half of the cooled chocolate cake in a trifle dish. Drizzle with espresso soak, then spread half of the mascarpone cream and add a pour of chocolate ganache.
  • Repeat layering with remaining cake, soaked with espresso, remaining mascarpone cream, and ganache, then top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours, preferably overnight.
  • Serve and enjoy your decadent dessert!

Notes

For the best results, ensure all components are chilled. Allowing the trifle to rest overnight will deepen the flavors.
