"Dirty" Horchata Latte with Espresso Swirl

Ingredients

For the Horchata

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice Serves as the base of the horchata.
  • 4 cups water Used for soaking and blending.
  • 1 stick cinnamon stick Infuses the drink with a cozy flavor.
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based) Adds a creamy texture.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Enhances the overall flavor.
  • 2–3 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (or maple syrup) Adds sweetness and richness.
  • 1 pinch salt Elevates sweetness.

For Serving

  • 1-2 shots hot espresso or strong brewed coffee Provides a bold contrast to the horchata.
  • ice cubes Essential for a refreshing drink.
  • Ground cinnamon, for garnish Adds aroma and elegance.

Instructions

Soaking the Rice

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the long-grain white rice, cinnamon stick, and 2 cups of water. Allow it to soak at room temperature for 4 to 6 hours or overnight.

Blending & Straining

  • After soaking, remove the cinnamon stick and transfer the rice with the soaking water into a blender. Add an additional 2 cups of fresh water and blend until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or nut milk bag.

Flavoring & Chilling

  • In a pitcher, mix the strained horchata with milk, vanilla extract, sweetened condensed milk or your preferred sweetener, and a pinch of salt. Chill in the fridge.

Building the Drink

  • Fill a tall glass with ice cubes, pour in the chilled horchata until three-quarters full.

Dirtying It Up

  • Slowly pour hot espresso shots over the top of the horchata, creating a layered effect. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.

Notes

Rinse rice thoroughly before soaking. Strain well to remove any gritty texture. Serve immediately for the best experience.
