Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water. Stir the mixture until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 2–3 minutes until smooth.
  • Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into 3-inch squares or triangles.

Frying

  • In a deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
  • Carefully drop a few pieces of the dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 minute per side until golden and puffed.
  • Drain the fried sopapillas on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • While they’re still warm, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle generously with honey. Serve immediately.

Notes

Feel free to prepare the dough a day in advance, store it in the fridge, and roll out when you’re ready to fry. Sopapillas taste best fresh out of the fryer.
