Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm milk Essential for a soft texture.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Foundation of the naan; gives the bread its body.
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Adds moisture and richness.
  • 2 teaspoons sugar Helps activate the yeast with a slight sweetness.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast Key for the rise.
  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt Provides a creamy texture and tangy flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Assists in achieving a light and fluffy naan.
  • 1/4 cup warm water Used to activate the yeast.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Infuses naan with aroma.

Topping

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted Richens the naan and adds a glaze.
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley (or cilantro) Provides a fresh finishing touch.

Instructions

Activate Yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until bubbly and frothy.

Make the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, add the warm milk, Greek yogurt, vegetable oil, and minced garlic to the activated yeast mixture. Stir well until combined.
  • Gradually sift in the flour, baking powder, and salt while mixing with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to form.

Knead It

  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 3–5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Let It Rise

  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a damp cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shape & Cook

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal balls. Roll each ball into an oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Heat a greased skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan, flipping it when it bubbles, until golden brown on both sides (approximately 2–3 minutes per side).

Add Garlic Butter

  • In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the remaining minced garlic and chopped herbs. Brush this mixture over the hot naan before serving.

Notes

Allowing the dough to rise adequately will yield a softer naan. Experiment with spices for unique flavors.
