Ingredients

For the filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened This luscious, creamy base brings a rich texture that melds perfectly with the other ingredients.
  • 1/2 cup cooked shrimp, finely chopped Juicy and tender, shrimp add a delightful oceanic sweetness to each bite.
  • 2 green onions, chopped Their fresh, vibrant crunch enhances the overall flavor with a hint of herbaceousness.
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder A warm, aromatic spice that elevates the filling with its robust essence.
  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce Adds umami depth, balancing the creaminess of the cheese and sweetness of the shrimp.

For assembly

  • 20 wonton wrappers These delicate skins form a perfect crispy shell that is light and delightful.
  • 1 egg, beaten (for sealing) Serves as glue that secures the filling inside the wrapper.
  • Vegetable oil, for frying Ensures a crisp, golden exterior that provides exciting texture.

For garnish

  • 1 tbsp chopped chives or extra green onions A garnish that adds an appealing green hue and freshness.
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce (for dipping) Perfectly sweet with a touch of heat, this sauce makes for an irresistible dip.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, finely chopped shrimp, green onions, garlic powder, and soy sauce. Stir the mixture until all ingredients are evenly blended, creating a creamy, flavorful filling.

Assembly

  • Place a single wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the filling into the center of the wrapper. Make sure not to overfill, as this could make sealing the wontons difficult.
  • Using your finger, brush the edges of the wrapper with the beaten egg. Fold the wrapper over to create a triangle or pouch shape, pressing the edges together firmly to seal tightly. Ensure there are no air pockets inside.

Cooking

  • In a deep pan or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the wontons in batches for 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Be mindful not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Once fried, transfer the wontons to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with chopped chives or extra green onions for an appealing garnish.
  • Serve hot with sweet chili sauce for dipping.

Notes

For perfectly crispy wontons, make sure your oil is hot enough before frying. A kitchen thermometer is invaluable for this task. Additionally, consider practicing a few wonton folding techniques to find the shape you enjoy most. Freezing uncooked wontons allows you to prepare them in advance; simply fry them straight from the freezer, adding a minute or two to the cooking time. Experiment with fillings—try incorporating vegetables, cheese, or other proteins for a fun twist!
